Rising Through Resistance The front cover demonstrates forms of activism in eliminating social and environmental injustices from the work of award-winning, Seattle filmmaker Jill Freidberg. Left: Mactu Rock. Photographer unknown, 2003 – students defend their rural teaching school from a federal police occupation. Top: Whole Family Fists, Photographer: Jorge Acevedo, 1979 – documenting a protest in the Mexican teachers’ movement (Mexico City). Right: Solo Un Camino, Photographer: Jorge Acevedo, 1979 – documenting a march in the Mexican teachers movement (Oaxaca). The lower image, Mother Earth with outstretched hands from a painting by Sarah Penny, is an echo of an early conference cover to celebrate our 10th annual conference. The Roman numeral X is used here as a “do not” lens to draw attention to activists-for-education in action, always with a calling out beyond self to place and community. The back cover, a tile and marble mosaic of a woman’s profile and an elder (in her hair) influencing her perceptions, by Pauline Sameshima, was also used as a previous cover. Together, the front and back covers represent a rising through resistance in the uncovering of voice and sight nurtured in the 10 years of community gatherings at this International Globalization, Diversity, and Education Conference. |
