Tips from The International SomaYoga Institute
4628 Pitt St. Duluth, MN 55804, 1.888.722.9642

How to Give Yourself the Maximum Benefit of Somatic Exercises

1. Learn to pay attention
  • Nourish self awareness through the breath and sensing
  • Pay attention to the process and internal sensations
  • Break movements into smaller parts and get truthful
  • Move slowly--the slower you go the more you will perceive
  • Keep movements novel/new (be curious)

2. Build Better Habits
  • Build awareness and then learn to self correct
  • Move gently, with the least possible effort and without force
  • Support from your center out to limbs
  • Radiate from your central axis (the spine)

3. Progress Responsibly
  • Stay pain free, patient, and positive
  • Align through gravity and the body's brilliance rather than fall into habit and patterns
  • Use self sensing with all movement patterns
  • Build competency responsibly (simple to complex; low load to high load; slow to spontaneous)
